Una legge storica che vieta l'aborto dopo 20 settimane di gestazione sulla base del dolore fetale, è entrata in vigore nel Nebraska la scorsa settimana. I sostenitori della vita -riporta l'OpposingViews- hanno espresso il desiderio che anche altri Stati seguano l'esempio. «Questo è un momento storico per coloro che lavorano per proteggere le madri e i bambini non nati», ha detto Tony Perkins, presidente del Family Research Council. «Questa nuova legge rappresenta l'ondata di impulso che il movimento pro-life sta avendo, ed è un passo importante verso il futuro». The Abortion Pain Prevention Act (LB 1103), scritto dal senatore Mike Flood, è stato trasformato in legge dal governatore repubblicano Dave Heineman in aprile. Tra le motivazioni che hanno convinto gli esperti, c'è la testimonianza di Kanwaljeet "Sunny" Anand, un pioniere nello studio del dolore fetale, oggi professore presso l'Università di Arkansas per le scienze mediche, che nel 2004 ha richiesto il divieto di aborto dopo le 20 settimane di gestazione, poiché il feto subirebbe un "grave e lancinante dolore".  E' stato inoltre dimostrato che il dolore fetale può anche essere più grave di quanto lo sia per gli esseri umani anziani, in quanto il sistema nervoso è immaturo e non ha ancora sviluppato meccanismi di adattamento che aiutano l'organismo a meglio sopportare il dolore. Si è inoltre verificato che i bambini non ancora nati, durante le osservazioni, «tentano di eludere certi stimoli dolorifici e rispondono ad essi con uno stress ormonale». Schmit-Albin ha inoltre rivelato che il suo gruppo è stato contattato da un certo numero di gruppi pro-life, interessati ad ottenere simili legislature statali nei loro rispettivi stati. E' molto probabile che, dopo le imminenti elezioni in America, siano numerosissimi i parlamentari pro-life che verranno eletti.

FRC Praises Nebraska's Newly Enacted Abortion Pain Prevention Act - http://www.frc.org

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Family Research Council today congratulates Nebraska State Senator Mike Flood for the successful passage and implementation of the Abortion Pain Prevention Act.   This measure protects unborn children from being aborted after 20 weeks.   The bill was signed into law by Gov. Dave Heineman in April, and takes effect today.

"This is a historic and celebratory moment for those who work to protect mothers and unborn children," said Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council. "This is the first time in history that a law recognizing fetal pain has been enacted.   This new law represents the next wave of momentum for the pro-life movement and is  a major step toward a post-Roe  future."

Perkins also praised U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE) and Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) for introducing similar legislation in the House and Senate.  Their bills would require women seeking an abortion after 20 weeks be informed that their unborn child can feel pain.

"We commend Sen. Mike Johanns and Congressman Chris Smith for their efforts to protect mothers and their unborn children. The abortion industry tries to discredit efforts like this because the concept of fetal pain destroys their strategy of depicting a developing baby as a blob of tissue. Acknowledging the truth of fetal pain recognizes the truth that a baby is an unborn person. We urge Congress to move these pieces of legislation forward," concluded Perkins.
